Dr. Daniel McKorley, Executive Board Chairman of McDan Group, has announced that Electrochem Ghana Limited will start processing refined salt in commercial quantities by August this year. The announcement was made during a visit by members of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) to the project site in Ada, Greater Accra region.
In his welcome speech, Dr. McKorley emphasized the company’s commitment to engaging off-takers both domestically and internationally. He noted that Electrochem, the largest salt refinery in Africa and a subsidiary of the McDan Group, will produce natural salt for export.
“We are building one of the biggest refineries in Africa. By August, it should be up and running. This is a product (salt) with high demand. Once we complete the ports and the refinery, we’ll produce for the industry,” he stated. He highlighted that the demand for industrial salt will ensure the refinery’s success, mentioning the wide range of uses for salt and its high purity—99.9% sodium chloride—intended for serious industrial use. The company plans to produce salt for both export and local consumption, selling to wholesalers rather than retailing.
Tsonam Akpeloo, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the AGI, stressed the importance of supporting large Ghanaian-owned businesses like Electrochem Ghana Limited. He remarked, “This is clearly a huge innovation not just in Ghana but across Africa. The only way we can take advantage of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area is by supporting large industries like Electrochem Ghana.”
Electrochem Ghana, with a 41,000-acre concession at Ada Songor, has the capacity to produce 1 million metric tons of salt per year for both domestic and international markets.
